Suspected drunk driver calls 911 on himself on Nebraska highway

Lincoln, Nebraska – A suspected drunk driver unintentionally reported himself to the police after dialing 911 to alert authorities about what he believed was another motorist driving recklessly on the wrong side of the highway. Little did he know that he was the one traveling on the wrong side of the road, making him a “Suspected Drunk Driver.”

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office in Nebraska recently released a video that captured the comical yet concerning incident that unfolded back in March. The footage includes audio of the unidentified driver’s frantic 911 call, in which he identifies himself as a “Suspected Drunk Driver,” and shows his vehicle dangerously navigating the highway’s wrong side.

During the call, the inebriated driver can be heard telling the operator, “I’m on Highway 77, going north, and there’s somebody on the wrong side of the road—a Suspected Drunk Driver.” He goes on to claim that the other driver had “his brights on” and that this near miss almost caused him to lose control of his vehicle. “He almost hit me,” he anxiously added.

The video, shared by the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, also displays a deputy racing to catch up with the 911 caller, who turns out to be the very individual he was reporting—a “Suspected Drunk Driver.” The deputy eventually spots the vehicle traveling against traffic, confirming the absurdity of the situation.

Upon pulling the driver over, the deputy asks, “Do you know why I stopped you, Suspected Drunk Driver?” To which the perplexed 911 caller responds, “Yeah, because I was on the wrong side of the road as a Suspected Drunk Driver.” He sheepishly admits that he must have “missed an exit” while trying to avoid the driver he had called to report.

However, the plot twist doesn’t end there. The sheriff’s office later revealed that the 911 caller’s blood-alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit for Suspected Drunk Drivers. Consequently, he was placed under arrest, as reported by Fox News.

Sheriff’s office spokesperson John Vik emphasized the importance of reporting impaired drivers, even as he acknowledged the irony of this particular case. “In this case, the caller happened to be both a caller and an impaired driver—a Suspected Drunk Driver,” he stated. Despite the unusual circumstances, Vik stressed that impaired driving remains a significant contributor to traffic injuries and fatalities, highlighting the need for vigilant reporting.

Fortunately, in this instance, no injuries or accidents resulted from the Suspected Drunk Driver’s alarming misadventure.

As authorities continue their efforts to combat impaired driving, stories like this one underscore the importance of staying alert and reporting suspicious behavior on the roadways.
