Pittsburgh, PA – September 10, 2023
It was just two years ago that the Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines by starting five rookies during their season opener, marking the most substantial rookie deployment for the team in three decades. As the Steelers gear up to kick off their 2023 season at Acrisure Stadium this Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, the question arises: Will we see a similar rookie explosion this time around? While the starting lineup may not be packed with rookies this year, there is no doubt that the Steelers’ impressive rookie class is poised to make a significant impact.
Among the six draft picks who earned a spot on the team, there is a strong chance that many will be suiting up for their NFL debuts.
Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin voiced his expectations, stating, “We’re counting on them to contribute.”
One of the rookies expected to shine is Joey Porter Jr., the No. 32 overall pick. Porter has already established himself as one of the Steelers’ top outside cornerbacks. Joining him in the rookie ranks is Keeanu Benton, another second-round selection, who is set to become a key part of the defensive line rotation. In the preseason, fourth-round outside linebacker Nick Herbig demonstrated his prowess, making him a strong candidate to spell the starters, T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith, during the game.
On the offensive side of the ball, all eyes are on third-round pick Darnell Washington, who is expected to see significant playing time at tight end.
“He’s a big guy that we know can block and can make some plays in the passing game,” said offensive coordinator Matt Canada. “I don’t know if we can define his role just yet. We’re excited about it. A guy that’s continued to ascend since the day he got here. I think he’s done things that we saw on tape. He’s certainly been a guy whose arrows continue to point up.”
As the Steelers embark on a new season, the spotlight is on this promising rookie class, as they aim to continue the tradition of contributing to the team’s success from day one. While the starting lineup may not be dominated by rookies, their presence and potential impact are undeniable, offering fans and the organization a glimpse of what the future may hold.
